When i was a kid my dad had a 1974 Chaparral that he bought brand new from sport mart for $450. At the time Chaparral had just gone out of business and was liquidating all their remaining sleds. Sport mart at that time was a dealer and my dad and 3 of his buddies went and bought these sleds... they were new but sold As-is.. no warranty,, his was a burgundy 1974 Thunderbird just like this one in the picture. Roy Nasso bought the same sled and His buddy Bob Marth bought the liquid cooled version which was 10 hp more... I was very young (3-4 years old) when he owned this but I can vividly remember him putting me in front of him and taking my for rides,, the smell of the 2 stroke burned my lungs and the sting of winter air chapped my skin .. It was the coolest sled to a very young boy and all the kids in the neighborhood were immediately jealous... because no one had a snowmobile.. I fell in love with snowmobiling from those days on, my dad owned a place in Baldwin where he and friends all owned cottages on the same street... these guys would ride sleds, hang out at ski's bar,, have some drinks, and just have a great time,,, Kinda like we do.... so fast forward to today... I found a guy selling a 1974 Chaparral Thunderbird .. I went and look at it and sat on it and honestly it brought tears to my eyes... I know my dad would have been tickled to see this sled,,, unfortunately that won't be possible all those guys Bob, Ray, Roy, and some of the name i forgot, are all gone now,, but their memory will always live with me... so to pay tribute i would like to restore this sled to it's former glory. Dad once told me, that everyone you meet, you'll take a piece of them with you. Throughout your life, piece by piece, that's what makes you ... you.
Love you dad... |
